This is a great lesson because the students will discover how sneaky advertisers are and just how many ads are directed toward targeting children. It was also really interesting looking at some of the old cigarette ads and seeing what the tobacco companies were allowed to say and do. This lesson is very informative and it's very important that students learn about advertising techniques because this will help them differentiate good and bad products not only with tobacco but with nutrition, healthcare, and all of the other health topics. ((And this totally brings me back to Consumer Health ha))

  2. I thought this was a great assignment, I would just be a little clearer on the work sheet because I didn't fully understand the second question until I realized its basically why it is from the first one, so I would either reword that or just add it to the first question. But other than that it was great.

Great lesson. It does a good job in helping students become more aware of the how cigarette companies try to sell their products and also can be used for other products.

  4. This a great lesson. I thought that thiscould really help benefit by teaching your students how advertisments try to use differnt advertisments to try to get consumers to buy their product. I like how this lesson involves the students to research picture that demonstrate the point your trying to make. This is a fun and interesting assignment that i could see myself using in the future.

  5. Good stuff and I learned how many cigarette ads have been actually used. Never paid attention, but as seen in older cartoons now. Could have been subliminal messages as well. It was neat to use google images as well as a basic search engine. lesson kept me involved and on track.

  6. This was a really good assignment! I liked it alot and I really liked how in the assignement you gave the students the key words to type into google. This allows you to control their search and prevent them from going onto in appropriate sites. However, I might make it more of a point to inform the students that they are to use those key words to help them and use only those words. Also, it was good that you gave them the advertising techniques and then used picutures to teach them how to be good consumers and tie it into your lesson with tobacco. The exercise was fun and very informative. Maybe you could have had them tell you how they can prevent themsleves from being influenced by the commercials to really bring home the point that they should not smoke and you know that they understand. I really like this though awesome idea!

This was a really good assignment because it allows the students to look up their own articles and apply what they learned from the advertising facts. It also has the students identify which advertising technique is being used which is really appropriate for the lesson. The end questions really tied the lesson together because it talked about who is targeted and chances are since young adults (high school) would be doing this activity it really drives it home.

    Hi Molly,

I really like the way everything was clear for this lesson. I think it is smart to have the definitions all set for the students. As we discussed in class, students are learning by default through seraching for images. I think that allowing them to make choices enables their independent thinking and right to expression. Overall, nice job! Christina

  11. I felt that it was a great assignment overall and forced the students to actually look at numerous adds and think about what they were trying to say and how they were saying it. However, I found that most of my ads were all similar. So in order to broaden the student's perspective I would suggest possibly asking them to find at least 3 different examples so that they are not repeating the same answers for all the questions like I did. It's kind of a lazy student's way to take the easy way out.

  14. I liked this lesson. It engages students to use google images, something that they are familiar with, as well as analyzing cigarette ads. I thought it was a good way to incorporate the techniques and allowing students to think critically about applying these techniques. It was tough because all of the ads were very similar, but that just makes this assignment more challenging and forcing students to look more into the ads to find different techniques.
I think that the questions go a little redundant by the the fifth picture. A little variety in the questions would be nice. Also maybe a guideline that says students must use at least four or five different techniques.
Other than that, great assignment, good directions, and a fun alternative to the typical look inside of magazines to find ads assignment that I did in almost every health class I have ever had.
